Home Staging Tips - Number 1 - Bathrooms

The Bathroom has to be one of the least glamorous rooms of a house; but, the potential impact it can have on a prospective Buyers' decision to buy can be huge.

In response to a recent study where Buyers were asked what conveys cleanliness to them when looking at a potential new home, their response: "The Kitchen Sink, the Laundry Room and the Bathrooms."

You will notice a recurring theme throughout these tips: CLEAN! And, I'm not talking your once-a-week surface cleaning...I'm talking DETAILED CLEANING.

So, arm yourself with the following list of supplies and products and follow me to the bathroom:

- Gloves
- Sponges (I use three different ones: one for the sinks and surfaces; one for the toilets; and one for the tub/shower
- Scrub brush
- an old Toothbrush (great for corners, along baseboards, around the toilet base, and grout)
- Paper Towels
- Bathroom Cleanser (preferably one with bleach; a disinfectant - I like Soft Scrub)
- Glass Cleaner (e.g., Windex)
- Clorox Bleach Pen (great for cleaning grout)
- Zap Restorer and Cleaner (removes rust, iron stains, calcium deposits, hard water stains, lime scale, soap scum, mold and mildew, and ground-in dirt on porcelain, fiberglass, tile and grout)
- Easy Off - BAM (for shower doors). Use Mr. Clean Magic Eraser to assist with tough spots.

CLEAN:

- Floors
- Walls
- Ceilings (knock down any cob webs)
- Door (both sides) Exhaust Vents
- Tub (make sure to run the jets in the tub to make sure there are no surprises)
- Shower (clean the grout)
- Shower Doors
- Sinks
- Faucets
- Toilets
- Vanity Drawers and Cabinets (inside and out)
- Mirrors
- Windows (inside and out)
- Screens
- Window Treatments (consider removing them altogether; or washing and ironing before putting them back up)
- Shelves/Built-ins
- Linen Closets (inside and out)

THE BATHROOM:

Complete any outstanding projects (improvement projects).

Wallpaper? Remove it! Why? Wallpaper is considered a custom decor choice; and, will rarely be the choice of the Buyer.

Patch all holes and cracks in the walls.

Paint walls a neutral color. Avoid white for the walls. Instead, choose a soft (universal) color.

Touch up any wood trim. Trim, ceilings and doors should be white. Using the same trim color throughout the home is preferable.

Wash all windows (inside and out, as applicable).

Replace outdated light fixtures.

Replace pitted or tarnished faucets.

Consider replacing the hardware on the cabinets for an inexpensive (but, effective) way to update the look of a bathroom.

Re-caulk, as necessary.

Remove all cleaning supplies from sight. If the next-best-place for them is under the Vanity (arrange them NEATLY in a container).

Vanity Cabinets should be neat and organized: Clutter-free.

Linen Closets should be tidy: Make sure the contents are appropriate to what should be in a linen closet. APPROPRIATE: Bath Linens (towels, washcloths); Bed Linens (sheets, pillow cases); Bar soap. INAPPROPRIATE: Clothes; Food; Craft supplies.

Tuck all wastebaskets away (place under the Vanity, if possible). When the house is shown, the wastebaskets should be emptied of all debris and lined with waste liners that "fit" the size of the wastebasket.

Remove family or personal photos.

Put away all toilet brushes and plungers.

Remove all toilet and tank covers and take up all rugs.

Remove items typically found on the floor (e.g., scales, hampers).

No personal items should be in plain view. These items should be collected and placed in a basket that fits easily under the sink (inside the Vanity).

If you have a "Kid's Bathroom" - I strongly recommend you change it into an "Adult Bathroom." Themed-rooms are a turn-off for Buyers.

Shower curtains should be fabric (preferably, white). No "busy" patterns. I've seen some striped patterns actually work nicely.

Place a full roll of toilet paper on the holder.

If candles are in the bathroom, then, they should be new candles (not ones that have been previously burned).

Place a fresh soap pump at each sink.

Place clean, fresh towels in on every towel bar. Rule of thumb: If the walls are white, the towels should be a color. If the walls have color or a pattern the towels should always be white. My preference: white ones.

Add a touch of green to the room (e.g., potted ivy).

Place all toilet seats in the "down" position.

PROPS FOR STAGING A BATHROOM:

- Plush, thirsty towels
- Greenery (Bamboo, ivy and palm frawns are a few to consider)
- Grasses/Reeds
- Art/Framed prints
- Soap pumps
- Fresh pillar candles (varying in height)
- Fabric shower curtains
- Roll of toilet papers
- Polished river stones
- Sea shells
- Wicker baskets (for functionality, as well as, staging purposes)

EXAMPLE: A clean, tidy, staged bathroom will create a "spa-like" experience for the Buyer.

New Year's Goal-Setting For Parents

The New Year is an ideal time for reflection and renewal.

Here is a question to help you reflect on your parenting.

It is a question.................to ask your kids.

This is the same question I asked each of my kids one year and the answers gave me a real shock. In fact, the answers made me stand back, have a good hard look at myself and put some changes in place. I won't go into detail but they did involve how I spent my time and how I spoke to two of them!!!!

Here's the question:

"What do I have to do to be a better parent?"

You have to pick your time to ask this. You don't ask this when they are sitting in front of the TV watching their favourite show or when they have a friend around. D'oh!

You don't have to use these exact words. Some variations could include:

"I'm doing my New Year's resolutions. Anything I need to take on board next year from your perspective?"

"I'm always giving you advice. What's one bit of advice you'd give me."

"If you were tell me one thing that would lift my parenting game, what would it be?"

You get the picture!

NB: If you have kids below primary school age answer the question yourself from their perspective, rather than ask them.

This question and its derivatives are behavioural. That is, they focus on what you have to do, not be.

If you do ask this question you may get a great response or you may simply get a grunt. Either way, as you set those New Year's resolutions consider making one of them a parenting goal. Here's how to make your goal effective:

1. Write it down and stick it in a place where you will see it.
2. Make the goal behavioural - i.e. it involves what you will do and say more in 2009.
3. Make the goal positive, not negative -i.e don't say what you won't do, say what you will do!
4. Check out how you are going at the end of January.
5. Then adjust your behaviour, not the goal, accordingly. That's how you can become a better parent one step at a time.

This year make sure you set yourself at least one parenting goal. And remember, that just one idea turned into consistent action can bring big improvements in any situation. You just have to take action.

While it can appear as a simple way of earning money, CPM is not exactly 'the' get-rich-quick avenue of affiliates. Since you are paid by banners viewed, it is logical then to imagine that the more views, the more money earned. How to get more views though? That's the key question.

Pay per click (PPC)

In this scheme, you get paid for every click to the banner you are displaying. PPC definitely pays more than CPM, as it is a more hazardous gamble on whether or not someone will actually click the banner after seeing it.

A site with high traffic and a site that also encourages clicking will fare much better in this type of scheme. Providing related content and pre-selling the affiliate's products on the site can lead to more clicks. Carefully targeting your audience is also a good way of getting the best out of your affiliate links.

Pay per sale/lead

This is the most popular way to earn money as an affiliate and the way that I have made most of my money as well. In this situation, the affiliate earns a share or a commission on the sale of every product he directs a client to.

This form of pay for performance is also the one that pays best. What happens is you get visitors to your site or blog, once there you presell your affiliate product or service in which when they click on the link that you provide them, they are then taken to the affiliate products website. If they buy the product, you earn the commission.

The art of Pre-Selling a product is a great way to sell an affiliate product. Unbiased product reviews are another very popular way to sell products.

Overall, it can be said that it is easy to earn money by being an affiliate... however, there is an art to it. With that said, anyone can do it. There are of course other ways to attract traffic for free including article marketing, blogging, social bookmarking etc but pay per click allows you to turn on the traffic almost instantly - if you know what you are doing.

And here we have one of the two major issues with affiliate marketing. If you don't know what you are doing with pay per click then it can be very, very time consuming and very expensive to constantly monitor, test and tweak your campaigns. It is an amazing traffic tool but I personally found that whilst the basics are relatively easy to follow, to be successful at it is a really steep learning curve. The methodology is constantly updating and it is also a very competitive arena. For me I found that whilst I really wanted to master it as I love technology, it was just too time consuming and I did not have the luxury of time as I was on a mission to replace my income by finding the best way to make money online fast.

The potential way around this of course is to find someone who is an expert in pay per click and outsource the task to them. We won't go into that now but suffice to say that as with any service providers there are good and bad ones so always try to go by recommendation if you can. The other issue with affiliate marketing of course is finding the right product that is going to make money online. The Issue With Self-Esteem

"Hi there, Sam Smally. Great to meet you! If you ever need a good used car, I'm the best around...here's my card, and there's 50 bucks in in for ya for anyone you send my way. Gotta run, see you around!" This is the greeting I received after being introduced to this person. The car salesman was an acquaintance of my neighbor, whom I ran into at the store, who had just run into the car guy.

"Sorry about that. He's just full of himself." Was my neighbor's response. Well, you can be sure that I will not call Sam when it's time to replace my battered mode of transport. I know, or have met quite a few people like that throughout my life, as I am sure most of us have. These people has no problem with self-esteem, they almost ooze it. You can tell by the car they drive, the clothes they wear, the way they speak at others rather than to them.

People that are bubbly and friendly don't necessarily have high self-esteem, they are usually just very nice, friendly people. It's all in the attitude. I must back up a bit, and explain some of the stereotypical characteristics I mentioned. Those with unusually high opinions of themselves don't always show it in their appearance or belongings or where they live. There are many with high self-esteem issues that don't drive fancy cars or dress in expensive clothes. On the other hand, there are quite a few people that I know that are very successful and have lived privileged lives either by inheritance, or thorough hard work. They are normal, friendly, caring people who would help out anyone in need. For instance, there are two gentlemen that go to my church that have made millions of dollars, yet they still help serve Thanksgiving dinners to the needy of5B4 our neighborhood, or help with clean-up after our annual spaghetti supper. Again, it's all in the attitude and how you treat others. You would never know that they were both multi-millionaires unless someone told you, and they would never tell you themselves.

There are many layman's theories of why some people have unusually high-esteem. In rare cases, it is being brought up in a household where everyone praised everything you did. Now that you are an adult, you act this way because you know that you are the best at everything. Sure, this does happen, but most people eventually are brought down to reality by the friendship and caring relationships of others. Sometimes actually listening to what is being said in church is enough for young people to get over it...really understanding Christ and his gospel.

There are individuals who were brought up dirt poor from broken families. They may have been abused, abandoned or ignored. They may have experienced violence, drugs, murder and other unthinkable acts in the regular course of their lives. Over time, these people sometimes need to make up a super-persona in order to escape the horrors of their childhood. I've met people like that, and they are severely injured poor souls. The only way for them to deal with reality is to think and act as though they are better than everyone else, and they eventually start to believe it.

Others feel they have shortcomings in their life. T5B4hey may be too short, too tall, too skinny, too overweight, not pretty or handsome enough. These people hide their faults with their invented personality. Thinking they are better than everyone else gives them a sense of worth, acceptance and value in society.

Throughout history there have been many conquerors and dictators who thought that they were living gods on earth, or close to it. Napoleon, Stalin, and Hitler are just a few examples of people who had such high-esteem, that they felt that they had the answer the a better world. That they alone could be the master of all they surveyed, and they alone knew what was best for their people. These people also started life in atmospheres that were less than ideal. Some were victims of oppression, violence, poverty, mental illness or abuse. These terrible conditions are certainly no reason to turn into a monster, the rest of the population didn't, but something just didn't work right in their brains and souls. Possibly at some point, these conditions weekend their spirits in such a way that allowed evil to take over.

We all hope that we are able to keep such people at bay in the future, of course, but what do we do about right now? Maybe it is us with the problem, a family member or a close friend? There is no easy answer. Usually the only way that unusually high self-esteem can be broken down into normality is an epiphany of some sort, usually brought on by a person that they5B4 highly respect or greatly admire. Sometimes a book, television show or movie turns a light on in their head and heart.

You won't get anywhere confronting them, they have to do it on their own. But you may be able to have a heart-to-heart talk with them, letting them know in gentle and loving terms that their behavior is hurting other's feelings. Upsetting people to the point where they are afraid and uncomfortable. There's also the chance that they might say the wrong thing to the wrong person and end up in a dangerous situation.

Until they discover for themselves, there is not much we can do but call attention with tact. Offer and give our support and understanding. Maybe leave a few books around such as the Bible or some other inspirational book, magazine or story. The important thing is to try not to alienate the person, as that may even make the condition worse. Involving them in events and activities with others may be uncomfortable, but it may also be part of the long road to recovery by demonstrating that you don't have to be great, to be great.

Self Improvement Sabotage - Too Tipsy to Tango

What good is self improvement and personal development if you turn around and sabotage your own efforts by celebrating prematurely?

We've all done this in some fashion or other, regardless of what our original goal was.

In the case of weight loss, we've all worked really hard at exercising and eating right for a month, lost 5 or 10 pounds, and then went WAY overboard on the reward process.

After eating in such a healthy manner and forcing ourselves to workout for 30 days, we show some serious progress, and decide that we deserve a few days off.

Friday night starts with a nice dinner and some drinks, which eventually turns into several drinks plus dessert, and Saturday morning finds us feeling dehydrated, hung over, and nutrient deficient.

By the time Sunday rolls around, we aren't feeling the effects of Friday night's drink fest anymore, but we did eat very poorly on Saturday as a result of feeling too under the weather to really care, and we certainly didn't exercise. We make a token effort at eating in a healthy manner on Sunday, but are only marginally successful, and as we are getting ready for another busy week, we can't seem to find the time to exercise.

By Monday, we have spent the last 3 days slacking off, we feel guilty and fat, we've probably gained 2 or 3 pounds, and we start to believe that we simply don't have what it takes to truly work hard consistently in order to keep the weight off.

Does that scenario or one like it sound familiar to you?

Let's use another common exa10F4mple to illustrate this point - having more money.

Although there are plenty of long-term strategies to build wealth rather than just living paycheck to paycheck, it is actually the short-term successes that tend to sabotage our efforts.

By trimming out a few unnecessary monthly expenses, cutting back on the amount of money we spend at the coffee shop each day, and also resisting the urge to buy that new outfit or that new power tool for the garage, we suddenly find ourselves with $200 in the bank at the end of the month that we normally don't have. YAY!

So then what happens? Rather than leaving that money in the bank in order to collect interest and to be added to the following month, we find something to spend it on! We pat ourselves on the back for saving up so much money in such a short period of time by making simple changes in our life, and we decide that we deserve a nice reward for the effort.

For some of us, that means a gleeful trip to the local mall, where the only thing overflowing more than the cappuccino is the massive selection of choices on the sale racks. For others, it's a night on the town with our friends where the more fun we have, the more free we get with spending the money that made this event even possible. Or, some people will keep it even simpler than that, and blow close to $200 by simply taking a family of four out for dinner and a movie.

There are numerous scenarios like the ones just described where you could toss a month's worth of savings right out the window in just a few short hours by merely deciding to reward yourself for your frugal living.

In fact, there are numerous examples of how this concept applies to life in general, and you can undoubtedly think of ways that you have applied this self-destructive behavior pattern to your own life at some point in the past.

You work really hard, stay disciplined, see some great results, and then rain on your own parade by celebrating either prematurely, or more than is warranted for the success that you've seen.

Losing 5 or 10 pounds does NOT warrant a 3-day alcohol and/or junk food binge, especially if those 3 days are spent without getting any exercise.

Saving $200 - whether you saved it in a month or even in a week - does not warrant finding a way to SPEND $200. That kind of defeats the purpose, don't you think?

Plug in your own life details to this formula and realize the hard truth that a lifetime of self-destructive behavior in any given area of your life is not going to be undone by 30 days of cleaning up your act.

Will you make some great progress? Absolutely! In fact, by consistently doing something for 30 days, you will have taken the majority of the steps needed to make that habit an actual lifestyle, which is, of course, the desired end result.

However, by overdoing it on the celebration - whether you are talking about weight loss, finances, or anything else - you will only force your old self-limiting beliefs to kick in, which will send you hurtling all the way back to square one, if not even farther than that.

Give yourself well-deserved rewards for your self improvement or personal development efforts, but make those rewards appropriate for what you have accomplished.

Terri and her co-worker, Jamie, ran into each other in the coffee room. Jamie recalled that Terri was having some work done on her house and asked how it was going. Awful! said Terri. The builder wont listen to me and I have to ask my husband to raise my concerns for me. What a chauvinist that builder turned out to be.

Jamie replied, You should just ask your husband to stop talking to the builder, so that the builder has to communicate with you in order to move forward with the work.

We tried that approach, answered Terri, and the result was even worse. The builder just made his own decisions and we ended up having to move a light fixture after the wallboard was already up. What a mess.

Well, said Jamie, Have you tried sitting the builder down and letting him know that he needs to be able to listen to both of you? He clearly needs a talking to.

Its not as simple as that, Jamie. Weve thought of all the obvious approaches.

Theres nothing like the desire to help manifested in a most unhelpful way. The problem here was not, of course, Terris frustration with the builder or Jamies desire to be helpful. The problem Jamies ineffective advice giving as the only way she knew how to offer help.

First, she offered advice without asking whether Terri wanted any. Then she proceeded to offer suggestions without having any real knowledge of what had been tried so far or what had been considered and rejected as a strategy. She plunged in with minimal knowledge of the situation and its complexities, which resulted in Terri having to explain why each piece of advice wasnt helpful, something thats just wasteful replay for Terri. She also insulted Terris intelligence inadvertently, since its likely that Terri and her husband were probably capable of generating the obvious solutions on their own. In essence, Jamie ended up making the conversation all about her own good ideas instead of doing anything that Terri might find truly helpful. Neither woman needed more tension in their lives.

Next time you find yourself opening your mouth to give advice, close it again, at least for a moment. If youre an inveterate advice-giver, youll have to work extra hard to break a pattern. Instead of blindly giving counsel, ask:

• Can I be helpful in some way? What would help?
• What have you tried so far?
• Are there options youve considered but havent tried?
• I have some ideas you havent mentioned yet. Would you like to hear them?

Think prompter or "coach" instead of fixer.

Real estate investing runs the gamut in terms of risk and investment success. The first rule of real estate investing, even before location, location, location, is be very careful with whom you are dealing. For some reason, real estate is fraught with unscrupulous characters, many of whom youll see on late night television commercials with their "no-money" down methods of becoming millionaires. Only a very small percent of these so-called real estate gurus are legitimate.

If you are seriously considering investing in real estate property, it means essentially that you will need:

Investment capital, or a legitimate means of attaining some without putting yourself in debt.

A good knowledge of the real estate market and the neighborhood in which you are looking to buy property.

Good management, people and negotiating skills

The ability to do repair work or access to people who can do it for you.
The name and number of a property inspector or engineer.

Unless you are able to find, evaluate and buy houses that are either in foreclosure or fixer-uppers, which can be turned around quickly, you will most likely serve as a landlord for the property while it increases in value. Be careful to whom you rent because your property must be well-maintained.

Since legitimate real estate investing means having some money to make money, you need available capital. For this reason, many people go into real estate after coming into a sizable amount of money. For example, empty nesters who sell a large home for $500,000 and buy a smaller condo for $250,000 have money to purchase another property or two.
Make sure to research your location. Go to local town board meetings, do research in libraries and go on the Internet to find out as much as possible not only about the location today, but about plans for the area over the coming years.

And then there are REITs Real Estate Investment Trusts. This is a way of investing in real estate for a lot less money and without having to worry about fixing a tenants leaking bathroom pipes in the middle of the night.
REITS invest in various corporations involved in real estate, ranging from industrial parks to shopping centers to construction companies. They are listed on the NASDAQ and the stock exchange.

Essentially REITS work in the same way as mutual funds, except they set up a diversified portfolio that deals only in real estate. They primarily pay the bulk of their earnings in investor dividends. Before investing in a REIT, consider:

The economic conditions where the key holdings are located

Past performance of the REIT and future projections

The manager of the REIT, who operates like a mutual fund manager

The overall state of the real estate market

REITS, like stocks, bonds and mutual funds, have high and low periods. Like other income-producing vehicles, they can be strong investments over time and pay dividends. They are fairly liquid and are a much safer way of investing in real estate than buying property.

Why Do You Smoke?

Have you ever thought about why you smoke? The answer to this question is important and can make a big difference in your success at quitting smoking. As a smoker I really never thought about why I smoked. When I felt cravings, anger, sad, and bored I typically would have a cigarette. It seemed to do the job and make me feel better. The craving would go away and if I were angry or sad it seemed to make me feel better. So why is this?

Years ago I starting smoking in high school because it was the cool thing to do. Back then I smoked only to smoke. After awhile I became addicted to the nicotine so I ended up smoking because I was addicted. Over the years I discovered that smoking helped with other areas of my life such as dealing with my feelings and emotional circumstances. Now I was smoking not only because I was addicted to nicotine but also it was my daily crutch.

Once I was able to figure out the reasons why I smoked I was able to better prepare myself for quitting. By journaling when and why I smoked I was able to compile a list of the types of situations, feeling, and times that I really wanted to smoke. This list became the foundation for my quit smoking program.

Beyond the obvious addiction to nicotine I knew I had to change my thinking about smoking. Yes, smoking did have short-term benefits to get me through difficult times but in the long run I just felt guilty for smoking. I discovered that there are healthier ways to deal with the circumstances that made me want to smoke. If you are not sure how to deal with things without smoking look to see what other people do. There is a vast amount of information and support groups available that can help you in this area of quitting smoking.

By knowing the reasons why I smoked I was able to find specific information and tools to incorporate into my daily life and thinking that helped me quit smoking. Millions of people get through life fine without smoking, I discovered that I too could be one of these people. By identifying the reasons why you smoke before you quit smoking you can be ready to handle most circumstances upon quitting.

Get Results by Understanding How Your Staff Think

We all think differently, we all have our own unique view of the world and put completely different meanings from one another, to everything that happens around us, to conversations that we have, to things we pick up in the news etc. In NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) terms, 'the map is not the territory'. None of us think about any situation in exactly the same way. This is because we all have our own unique values, beliefs and needs.

The iceberg, used in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, represents how our results are driven by our behaviours which are derived from our emotions which are created by our thoughts. Therefore what we achieve is driven by what we think.

Basically this means that in order to change someone's results, we need to dive beneath the surface and change the way they think. Most managers tend to float on the surface and concentrate on the performance itself. This usually results in a directive or advisory approach. When you understand how the brain works then you will understand why these traditional approaches are ineffective long term.

When you understand that everybody has a different view of the world, then it would follow that what is right for one person isn't necessarily right for another. Think about this the next time you want to offer your advice to somebody. Yes it may be good advice for you, and it may be what you would do in that situation, but is it right for them?

Assignment

Start taking note of conversations over the next month, conversations that you have at home or work or with friends, but also other peoples conversations (honestly, you are not being nosey, you just have a genuine interest in people!)

Note how often people are not always talking about the same thing even though they think they are. Listen to how people's opinions differ. Notice how people get frustrated when they can't get their point across or the other person doesn't quite get it. How often do people give, a 'whatever' answer and just quit trying to explain? How often do people give their advice only to have it shrugged off? How often do you receive advice that falls on deaf ears? You will start to smile to yourself as you notice different points of view on the same subject, or different meanings assigned to the same conversation.

Million Dollar Traders

There's a great show on British TV - Million Dollar Traders. There are two very important lessons that every trader must understand, that have been perfectly illustrated in this documentary, and I want to discuss those here. Any trader who doesn't understand these lessons is doomed to fail, just as many of the traders in the show are failing.

Before I continue, here's a quick resume of the show for anyone who hasn't seen it. London City trader and hedge fund manager Lex Van Damn (great name!) decided to set up an experiment to see if he could teach anyone to trade. He interviewed hundreds of applicants, and finally selected 8 people. Those he chose came from all kinds of backgrounds - there's an environmentalist - who wants to try and trade only ethical stocks - a soldier, a boxing promoter, an entrepreneur, a retired IT consultant, a vet, a student and a shopkeeper.

Some of these folks are better educated than others, which is important because it relates directly to one of the lessons that this show has so wonderfully illustrated - which I'll come to in a moment.

The ex-vet (I'm talking about animal doctor here, not the army kind of vet!) is highly educated, and comes from a wealthy family. The retired IT man spent 40 years working as a computer programmer at IBM. The shopkeeper studied at university before joining the family business.

At the other end of the scale, we've got the fight promoter who has no such privileged education. The soldier and the environmentalist are of average education as far as I can tell, and the student is obviously still studying.

The eight who were picked were given two weeks intensive training by Van Dam and his team of traders. They covered all bases, including fundamental analysis, technical analysis, trading psychology, and all the practical aspects such as how to work their Bloomberg terminals and place trades.

Following that, they were straight onto their own trading floor for six weeks of live trading, with real cash. Quite a lot of it in fact - one million of Lex Van Dams own hard earned dollars.

In the first show we saw highlights of this training, and the first week of trading. As you can probably imagine, their first week was pretty traumatic, and they were all over the place. By the end of the first day, only one of them had placed a trade. By the end of the week, they all had, but they had all lost money.

In the next episode, we saw them trade for another two weeks. And this is where it gets really interesting, because we're starting to see who gets it and who doesn't. Depending on your own experience in trading, you may be surprised at the results so far...

Ok, so here's the first lesson: Success in trading has very little to do with intelligence, and everything to do with personality.

Before I go on, let me just make a disclaimer. What constitutes intelligence is something that is often debated. Is a high IQ intelligence? What about creative types? For our purposes here, I'm going to go with the popular conception of intelligence being a reasonably high IQ and good education.

On that basis, we'd expect the computer programmer, vet, and university educated shopkeeper to do well. The soldier and the fight promoter should find it tougher.

And yet exactly the opposite was true. In fact, the Simon the computer programmer (remember, he worked as a consultant for IBM for 40 years) actually ended up walking out halfway through the experiment. He just couldn't do it. It didn't suit his personality. He said, and I quote as best I can remember it:
"This is the second most stressful thing I've done in my life, after my divorce". He was a wreck. His results were so bad, he was losing the team more than the winning traders were making - put together!

Why would someone apparently intelligent, well educated, and used to working with numbers, struggle so much with trading? Well he said it best himself:
"I'm used to writing computer programs. Once they're written, either they work, or they don't. If they work, they continue to work forever. If they don't, then you find the bugs, fix them, and then the program works and continues to work forever. With this, I keep doing the same thing but I get different results. Why? Because there are humans involved".

I couldn't have put it better myself. Despite the thousands of "program trades" that are made every day, trading is essentially a human activity, driven by emotion. And boy have we seen some emotion in this show. Cleo the ex-vet has spent 3 weeks sat in front of her trading screen and barely made a single trade - she's paralysed by fear. She's not made a huge loss, but she's not made a profit either - she can't - she won't trade! Another of the traders whoops for joy every time one of his trades ticks up. They're both totally controlled by their emotions.

But lets get back to this thing Simon the computer man said. He's trying to apply rules to trading, in the same way his computer programs are essentially just sets of rules. He can't cope with the fact that doing the same thing over and over, doesn't always produce the same results.

This is the second great lesson that Million Dollar Traders is exposing: Trading is not about rules, it's about principals.

What's the difference? Hollywood screenwriting legend Robert McKee puts it brilliantly:

"A rule says 'You must do it this way'. A principal says 'This works...and has through all remembered time.' The difference is crucial."

To paraphrase what he goes on to say:

"Anxious, inexperienced traders obey rules....Artists master the form."

Trading is more art than science. You cannot apply rigid rules. If that worked, we'd all set up automatic trading programs, everything would become automated, and the market would just stop working because nobody would have an edge any more.

Instead, we must learn the principals of what makes prices move. Understand the humans making the decisions. Understand the emotions and responses to prices on a screen. And have a set of guiding principals to lead us to our trade decisions in any given circumstances.

Understanding principals and being able to apply them in any situation is far more valuable than just blindly following a set of rules.

And that's why the computer man failed. He's spent his entire working life following rules. Put him in front of a chart, and he just carries on applying rules.

The vet on the other hand, was simply a slave to her emotions. She was completely controlled by her fear. The worst thing is she knew it! Her screen was covered in post-it notes telling her "you can't win if you're not trading" and "just pull the trigger!" and so on. But despite knowing what she should do, she couldn't actually bring herself to do it. Her education, privileged background, and apparent intelligence were worthless to her.

And then we had the winners. By far the most successful trader so far is single mum Caroline, the entrepreneur. Her experience in setting up her own business and overcoming all the obstacles and difficulties that come with that (not to mention the difficulties of being a single mother of twins), prepared her nicely for the trading floor. While those around here were either leaping up and down with joy at having made a minor profit, or crying into their coffee cup after suffering a loss, the entrepreneur was calmly watching her charts, entirely emotionally detached from the market.

With ruthless precision, she was cutting her losing trades as I can imagine she might fire under performing employees. She greeted her winners with the same total lack of emotion as her losers. When Lex Van Dam called her into his office to congratulate her on being "...the best trader on the floor", her response spoke volumes:

"I'm only the best at this point," she said. "All my trades could turn round against me this afternoon and then I'll be the worst."

As Lex rightly replied:
"That's why you're the best - because you understand that".

The soldier has been doing pretty well too. His training has prepared him to examine situations, think through possible options, and then choose his action carefully, based on a set of guiding principals. No doubt the strength of character and ability to keep emotions under control that come with battleground experience are an asset to him on the trading floor.

Now I'm not saying that only battle hardened ex-army types, or successful entrepreneurs can ever make it as traders. What I am saying is that most people fail to recognise how important personality, emotional control, and a certain flexibility are when it comes to the markets. If you go into the game knowing the challenges ahead, you have a much higher chance of success.

At the time of writing, there's a final show still to be broadcast, and from what I understand, only three of the traders make it to the end of the eight week experiment. Maybe the vet will make a comeback, but I'm not counting on it!

Let me then summarise the two lessons that Million Dollar Traders has so beautifully crystallised on screen:

1. Success in trading has very little to do with intelligence or education. It has everything to do with character. More specifically, strength of character. Those who can control their emotions rather than be controlled by them, are far more likely to succeed.

2. Learning to trade is about learning principals, not rules. Understanding principals will enable you to make money in any market, under any kind of conditions. Rules might make some money for a short time, but as long as there are humans in the market, rules will never produce fixed predictable results every time. If that's what you're looking for, put your money in the bank. Actually, on second thoughts....!
